Film Production: 180 degree rule and match on action

We are now moving on to film production. In order to make our short films we must know about match on action and the 180 degree rule.

Match on action is when you must have the two actions the same in both shots when you are cutting e.g. open door has to be the same width or eye line has to match.

The 180 degree rule is when you can only have cameras on one side of the actors. You are able to move the camera anywhere along the 180 degrees but cannot pass over the line or else this will not match e.g. if you have two people in a shot, with one on the right and one on the left you cannot change sides or else the people will be on the other sides and their eyes will not be looking in the same direction.
